“Each young man finding the path to becoming the man God intends them to be.”
“Showing respect for those around you, showing up on time, representing what you stand for, and being a good person.”
“To be the best version of yourself at all times, holding yourself to a higher standard.”
These were the words the Chaminade baseball program used to describe Esto Vir’s meaning to them. Each definition is unique and highlights different virtues.
The Latin phrase “Esto Vir” translates to “Be a Man” and has been adopted by Chaminade as its main slogan, which can be found everywhere on campus. The Chaminade website says that “Esto Vir is more than a motto. It is something we take to heart.”
This year, the Chaminade Baseball team has decided to incorporate “Esto Vir” into their new all-black uniforms, with the phrase in bold on the front, showing just how much it means to them.
Cooper Brown, ’26, a left-handed pitcher for the Red Devils who had a 3.37 ERA last year, when asked how he weaved the phrase into his play on the field, said, “I always try to motivate the guys and bring intensity in everything we do, especially in practice. Sometimes that intensity can get out of control, and I’ve been told many times that I need to take a deep breath. There is always room for improvement; that’s what Esto Vir is all about.”
Carson Cosby, ’25, who has been in the program now for 4 years, being on varsity since his freshmen year, said, “Esto Vir applies more in practice than in games because it is easier to mess around in practice and not take things seriously. The most improvement happens in practice, though, and it truly separates the talented from the hard workers.”
When asked how the meaning of Esto Vir changes from person to person, the head coach of the baseball team, Coach Schilly, said, “Different guys can lead in different ways, different guys can develop at different paces, but every guy can be a man of strong character.”
Later on in the interview, Schilly said, “Esto Vir gives us an edge over our competitors because we have a common basis to fall back on in terms of character development across sports and in the classroom. I do think it is a reminder that when we are playing, we are representing something bigger than ourselves.”
It is the standard at Chaminade to live out “Esto Vir.” What that means, though, varies from who you ask, making it a personal journey between the men at Chaminade and who God wants them to be, whether that involves them on the field or not.
With the spring just around the corner, look out for our Red Devils in black, sporting “Esto Vir” front and center at Russ Isaak Field. Coming off a tough season last year, the team is looking to gain some moxy this season and take advantage of that chip on their shoulders, using Esto Vir as a way to unify the team’s ambition and mesh them as one, translating Esto Vir to the diamond.
