A Christmas Carol, originally a novella written by Charles Dickens, was published in 1843. The next year it was adapted into a stage production by Edward Stirling and premiered in London. It also toured England in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Film and T.V. adaptations of the classic have introduced the story to a wider audience. Some worldwide favorites are Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983), Scrooged (1988) with Bill Murray, and A Christmas Carol (2009) with Scrooge voiced by Jim Carrey and Fred voiced by Colin Firth.
Although this is Chaminade’s all-school play, there is a sizeable amount of singing throughout the show. About half the cast doubles as an ensemble member or a caroler.
Ethan McDaniel, ’26, (Ebenezer Scrooge) says, “I absolutely love playing Scrooge. I always loved watching the 2009 Christmas Carol movie as a kid and its fun playing a grouchy character.”
Kieran Thompson, ’31, (Tiny Tim) is performing in his first Chaminade Drama production. He says, “Mrs. Lawrence, the middle school drama director, and all of the cast have been very welcoming, and I am enjoying preparing for my CCP Theatre debut!”
Gabby Gremaud, Cor Jesu ’26, (Ghost of Christmas Past/Caroler) says, “The Ghost of Christmas past was always my favorite in the movies, and I was beyond excited to play them. Overall, seeing the show itself come together has been so rewarding and I can’t wait to perform!”
Molly Coulter, Villa Duchesne ’29, (Wilkin’s Daughter/Caroler) says, “A Christmas Carol is so fun because of all the friends there are to make memories with. I play Wilkin’s Daughter, and I like my role because it isn’t too big, but I still get to sing a song! I love the way Mrs. Lawrence makes sure to put us in roles we feel comfortable in.”
Chaminade’s production performs in the Little Theatre from Wednesday, December 11th – Saturday, December 14th, and should run about 1- 1 ½ hours per performance.
