“Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.”
That was an easy answer for Jonny Jordan, ’26, when asked what his favorite sports quote of all time was. He didn’t stutter, he didn’t have to think about it; it became abundantly clear that Jordan lives by it. That is the standard.
Jordan, on a regular school day, wakes up at 5:45 and is out of the house by 6:30 to drive to Chaminade to get a quick workout in before school. After school is over, he takes a short break in the Commons and then hits practice hard again from 4:00 to 6:00. After that practice is finished, he stays late to get some more shooting in, and after that, he lifts. When he gets home at 8:00, he eats dinner and then finishes his homework, finally in bed by 11:00 or 12:00.
As crazy as that schedule sounds, Jordan goes through it, every… single… day. He models his work ethic after legendary point guard, Stephen Curry.
“He is someone who really inspires me to work hard in this game. There is a reason he is the best shooter of all time.”
Off the court, Jonny has many popular nicknames including JJ, Jonny Jumper, and his personal favorite J2zzz. He also loves playing pickleball and ping pong with the guys on the occasion he does get some free time.
Jordan has set some personal goals for himself this season. He wants to raise his average to 13 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds, which would all be career-highs, and he wants to continue growing as a leader on the squad. His ultimate goal though, is still “to win a state championship. It’s that simple, it’s the only thing I have my eyes on.”
For the time being, Jordan and the rest of the Chaminade Basketball community will have to wait to find out if they can pull off a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since 2016. There is no doubt that Jordan’s unselfish and down-to-earth personality coupled with his relentless work ethic will help his team achieve its aim and bring home a ‘ship.
Last year, he fell just short of his goal. This year, he is poised to make the jump.
