Mr. Thornburg, mostly known around campus as “Thorny,” has been an iconic figure at Chaminade and especially in the athletic department for over 30 years. He is known for his fun classes and laid-back demeanor. He has a unique way of teaching that is like none other, and any alumni or former student of his can attest to that. He likes to settle disagreements by making his students do pushups and other unusual punishments.
It might be known to some that a tradition for his junior and senior FIT classes is taking students on a mini field trip to Olivette Lanes on a short bus ride. Here, the students learn how to bowl according to Mr. Thornburg. He demonstrates how it is done and shows how to get as close as possible to a perfect score.
Many students get this honor, and almost all would agree it is a fun trip that teaches them something new. Bowling is not the most popular sport or activity by any means, but it is still a great exposure to a sport that is good to know throughout one’s lifetime.
This is why the class is all about getting exposure to “lifetime” sports. Such sports include pickleball, badminton, volleyball, cornhole, handball and more. In each class, the students play one sport and Mr. Thornburg makes it competitive by setting the environment and drafting teams.
He has a unique style of teaching that sticks with all the students he teaches. When asked how long he has been taking his classes on this field trip, he said that he has been coming here for 16 years. “Mr. Gauvain originally started the tradition in the mid 90’s, and I just carried on the tradition.”
Mr. Thornburg is liked universally by his students, which is why most Chaminade seniors recommend taking this class. It is a great, relaxing class that gives students some leeway. As long as you show up on time, in dress code, and pay attention to get good grades on the online quizzes, it is a fun class all can enjoy.
