As we enter the fall season and Halloween peeks around the corner, people begin to buy candy, pumpkins start being carved, and spooky decorations appear on every street. Arguably the most popular and exciting Halloween pastime among American people is watching Halloween and horror movies.
The students of Chaminade are no exception to this fact, and when asked what their personal favorites were, they gave us some varying and exciting different options.
While discussing his favorite horror movie, Grant McGuire, ’28, said, “Halloween 1 is my favorite horror movie because I always like the jump scares in it and because it is a classic.”
This movie and its sequels are cult-classics, and I’m sure many readers out there couldn’t agree more with Grant’s opinion. However, as we progress through the classes from youngest to oldest, the variation in movie opinions changes.
Desmond Allman, ’27, had this to say when asked about his favorite spooky horror movie: “My favorite horror movie is Shaun of the Dead, since it is not only horror, but because also a comedic movie.”
This fan favorite explores the life of an electronic store employee named Shaun, who lives a rather boring life until his town is overcome with zombies.
The senior class shows a mix between a traditional animated movie and another classic horror movie.
Henry Wilson, ’25, said that his favorite Halloween movie is the original Nightmare on Elm Street because it has “an entertaining plot but is also goofy, which makes it not too scary.”
Nightmare on Elm Street is about a few Midwest teenagers who are preyed on in their sleep by a creepy knife-fingered killer named Freddy Krueger.
Another senior, Jackson Chlebowski, was also asked about his favorite Halloween movie.
He followed by saying that his personal favorite is It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. “It’s a classic that always has my family sitting down to eat candy and watch together,” he said.
Obviously, the different students of Chaminade have a variety of opinions regarding what the best Halloween/horror movie is, and there is no true movie to trump them all. Hopefully we all find the time to watch our own favorite Halloween movie with our family and friends this fall.
