Jayson Tatum and Matthew Tkachuk both struck the sports world this year by winning the championship in their respective sports. Jayson won the NBA Championship and Matthew won the Stanley Cup. While they were both competing for the titles, it was made known that the two were classmates here at Chaminade. The iconic picture of them both (above) was shown across many platforms of social media and sports channels.
Jayson Tatum put up 25 points per game, just under 10 rebounds per game and 6.3 assists per game in the postseason. His efforts helped lead the Boston Celtics to their 18th NBA championship.
Matthew Tkachuk scored six goals and had twenty-two total points in the postseason to help lead the Florida Panthers to their first Stanley Cup title in their history.
These two champions have left a great impact on our school. Not only did the news of them going to Chaminade bring more attention to our school, but it also brought us together as a school and allowed us to have a larger sense of pride about our school.
Peter Genovese, ‘26, had this to say about Jayson Tatum and Matthew Tkachuk: “I think that [the titles] were well deserved despite what the haters might say. It is especially special that they won it in the same year.”
Their impact here at Chaminade is immeasurable, especially Jayson who was on Chaminade’s 2016 state championship team. Both of them are shifting their focuses to their upcoming seasons and I am certain that the Chaminade family will be watching many of their games this season.
