Whether you are walking in the halls, walking between classes, or heading over to practice after school, you might have seen Mr. Grumich on one of his daily power walks. He often walks around the Skip or down cemetery lane, but one of the details that is consistent between all his walks is the fact that his Airpods are always in. That leads to the question: What could Mr. Grumich possibly be listening to? To solve this mystery, I first asked some of the members of Chaminade theatre for predictions on what they would expect him to be listening to, and then I asked the man himself what he listens to on these famous walks.
A lot of people simply stated that they thought Mr. Grumich listened to show music from theatre productions. Charlie Caruso (’26) thought that Mr. Grumich listened to music from the show Footloose, which is known for its catchy 80’s soundtrack. Similarly, Jack Estopare (’27) also thought that he listened to music from shows but instead cited old school musicals like Guys and Dolls and Singin’ in the Rain.
Other people had less cliche answers to what they thought Mr. Grumich listens to. Owen Hanford (’25) stated that he thought that Mr. Grumich listened to 90’s country music, listening to artists like Tim McGraw and Allan Jackson. Owen further stated that he believed the iconic airpods are blasting the Irish rock band, The Cranberries, which are known for their hit song, “Zombie.”
Probably the most creative answer given by those interviewed was from Cormac Ward (’26), who believed that Mr. Grumich must listen to 90’s rap artists like Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. He stated that Mr. Grumich simply has that 90’s rap vibe, so it could be plausible that he also listens to that kind of music.
When I asked Mr. Grumich what he listened to, his response greatly surprised me and was straight out of left field. After I asked him what he listens to on his walks, Mr. Grumich stated, “Ha, funny! Sorry to disappoint you. But it is not music. It’s always some sampling of sports podcasts or talk radio really. I rarely listen to music at all.”
He later stated that he liked the Beatles but as already mentioned, he doesn’t listen to any music on his walks. This threw off all the guesses given by the interviewees, but honestly shouldn’t have been too surprising. He is one of the JV baseball coaches, and he often is the announcer for the basketball and football games, so it isn’t too far off to guess he listens to sports.
