This December, the biblical story of the dreamer who became a star comes to life in Chaminade Drama’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The operatic musical follows Joseph—an obnoxiously smug golden child who’s hated by his brothers. His character is put to the test as he endures slavery, incarceration, and servitude throughout the story, eventually learning to appreciate and share his unique gifts with the world.
Personally, the role of Joseph has been an interesting one to portray. His character is unlikeable and shallow for a good chunk of the story, so it’s been a challenge to add dimension to his character despite his sometimes flat disposition. However, I’ve absolutely loved embracing the campiness of the show and upping the cheese factor when possible. This genre of musical theatre is certainly a new experience for me, but the overall process has been exciting to navigate. Plus, the cast and crew have been incredible to work with.
