This Fall, the great William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream comes to the Skip Viragh Center for the Arts from October 5th through 7th. The five-act play will be two hours in length with one intermission, acted out by our own Chaminade thespians.
The play tells the story of four Athenian lovers — Lysander, Demetrius, Hermia, and Helena — who run off into the forest in spite of their families’ opinions. In this forest lay many mischievous fairies who make Demetrius and Lysander fall in love with the same girl, causing much drama and antics. While all four lovers run wild in the forest pursuing each other, the lead fairy Puck plays a very dirty trick on the fairy queen Titania. With both the lovers and the fairies confused, pandemonium runs rampant. However, when all the dust settles, true love prevails, as Puck decides to reverse all the magic and the two couples reconcile and marry. Through its many ups and downs, the show proves to be a comedy that will undoubtedly keep you on the edge of your seat.
When interviewed, the director and middle school theater teacher Mrs. Lawrence expressed her excitement for the show, voicing that “Midsummer is [her] favorite play of all time and means a lot personally.” She added that it “is a great piece with the central theme of coming together with friends and making memories,” referring to A Midsummer Night’s Dream as the “perfect play for the times we live in right now.” Actor Grant McGuire, when asked for his thoughts on the show, said, “I think that it is a very whimsical and creative play that will be a good watch for our students. All of us actors have been working very hard memorizing our lines and believe that our collective performance will speak for itself.”
